How do I obtain an NIE number?
If you’re planning to go to Spain for an extended period or to do business there, you’ll need an NIE number. In this blog post, we’ll explain how you can apply for the NIE number.
What is the NIE number?
The NIE number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero), or the identification number for non-residents in Spain, is needed for all sorts of matters. For things like buying a (second) house, opening a Spanish bank account, or receiving an inheritance.
Steps to obtain the NIE number
Below you’ll find a summary of the steps you need to follow to apply for an NIE number. If you want to receive a more detailed step-by-step plan, you can obtain it for just €28 via this link.
- Make an appointment with the Spanish police
The first step is to make an appointment online via the Spanish government’s website. This can be done both in Spain and via a Spanish consulate in your home country. Note that they don’t speak English here; basic knowledge of the Spanish language would be handy.
- Gather the required documents
Ensure you have all the necessary papers at hand: (1) a completed application form (EX-15), (2) a copy of your passport, (3) a completed modelo 790-012 and proof of payment thereof. (4) Sometimes, proof of your purpose in Spain is also requested (such as a work contract or deed of ownership).
- Pay the fees
You need to pay a small fee (€9.84) for the application. You pay this directly at a bank ATM in Spain or at the Spanish consulate.
- Submit your application
Submit the documents at the police station or consulate on the day of your appointment.
- Collect your NIE number
Usually, you receive your NIE immediately, but this depends on where you submitted your application.
Obtaining an NIE number is therefore an important step (and often legally required) if you want to do business in Spain or stay there for an extended period. Make sure you’ve prepared everything well to make the process as smooth as possible.
